Camminando con Mattia: una memoria collettiva che ci è presente

La sua esperienza di migrante, unita alla capacità di riportare nel contesto culturale e politico dell’Italia degli anni ’70 il lungo vissuto (56 anni!) americano, ha lasciato un segno. Ci troviamo di fronte ad una memoria – a distanza giusto di trent’anni dalla morte – ancora oggi più che mai viva e capace di ricordarci come la mobilità delle genti sia anche espressione di progetti di emancipazione, sia per i paesi di partenza sia per quelli di arrivo.

La memoria di Mattia ha infatti camminato nel corso degli anni. Pur dimorando a Porchiano appena un decennio, la sua figura è entrata nella costituzione memoriale dell’Amerino. Ciò per la capacità a situarsi in uno spazio di riconoscimento della tradizione del movimento contadino, mentre veicolava stili di vita assolutamente informati alla modernità associativa appresa negli USA.

Quel territorio in cui era nato ed è ritornato a vivere, rappresenta oggi uno spazio accogliente che permette a molte persone diverse, provenienti da tanti Paesi, di sentirsi a casa. Come ben si respira nel villaggio natio, Porchiano, c’è una comunità che sa essere accogliente, aperta e coesa, senza ripiegarsi in una prospettiva di chiuso comunitarismo. Per questo insieme anche solo chi si affacci al Parco Mattia, magari durante la festa del Primo Maggio, ne rimane attratto, senza averlo conosciuto personalmente, dalla figura di Mattia, per il significato simbolico che essa continua ad assumere nel suo saper essere uomo estremamente moderno e pur tuttavia profondamente legato a valori “antichi”, per la sua capacità di continuare a trasmettere messaggi vivi anche dopo la sua morte.

Ne è passata di acqua sotto i ponti, da quel tragico gennaio in cui scomparve. La memoria ha camminato nei singoli cuori ma anche attraverso pubbliche rammemorazioni: dal masso erratico posto pochi anni dopo la sua morte (con la commemorazione del sindaco Silvani), all’intervento di Lama (futuro sindaco di Amelia) nel decennale, alla via cittadina a lui intitolata di recente in Amelia.

Nel 2004, a 25 anni dalla sua scomparsa, lo spettacolo “Mattia Mio dammi 100 Lire” (coordinato da Pierluigi Sbaraglia e promosso da varie associazioni, in primo luogo Arciragazzi-Casa del Sole, Pro Loco e Dominio Collettivo di Porchiano), ha ripreso la ricerca storico-culturale realizzata negli anni ’70 da Sandro Romildo con le studiose Daniela Margheriti e Carla Pernazza (ne uscì nel 1983 il volume “Contadini in Umbria tra ‘800 e ‘900, sostenuto dall’ISUC e dedicato “a Mattia”) assieme al documentarista Paolo Boccio.

Il 28 aprile 2007, presso il Parco Mattia, si è parlato di lui e con lui a partire dai ricordi, dalle testimonianze, dalle fotografie e da spezzoni di filmati, girati a Paterson e a Porchiano negli anni ’40 e ’50, che fanno parte del Lascito di Mattia. A quella iniziativa parteciparono amministratori del Comune di Amelia e della Provincia di Terni, insieme agli studiosi dell’Istituto storico regionale dell’Umbria.

Dopo quel primo appuntamento pubblico, gli appuntamenti si sono moltiplicati, sempre con la presenza di studiosi provenienti da varie regioni d’Italia. La festività del I Maggio, in modo particolare, è divenuta centrale nella rappresentazione memoriale di Mattia.

Il 30 aprile del 2009 l’evento della serata di confronto storico su Mattia ha coinciso con la pubblicazione di un quaderno a carattere memoriale curato da Maria Grazia Ruggerini, Sandro Romildo e Antonio Canovi dal titolo “Il sogno di Mattia tra Paterson e Porchiano”. La serata storica si è poi connessa simbolicamente con il passaggio dei giovani che portano avanti la tradizione folclorica del “Cantamaggio”. A tutto ciò non si è arrivati casualmente, ma per il sostegno che a questi eventi offre la Pro Loco di Porchiano. Davvero sorprende la densità vitale del deposito memoriale che tuttora si va stratificando – per sovrapposizioni soggettive e generazionali – attorno alla figura di Mattia. Siamo di fronte ad una figura biografica che sollecita buone domande e chiede di essere interrogata nel tempo presente. Da qui muove il progetto di una vera e propria ricerca storica volta a indagarne la biografia sui due lati dell’Atlantico.

Walking with Mattia: a collective memory that is present and with us (now)

His experience of being a migrant, together with his capacity to bring his long American life (56 years!) into the political and cultural world of Italy in the 1970’s left its mark. We are dealing with a memory – at a distance of thirty years since his death – that today, more than ever, is alive and able to remind us of how the mobility of people is an expression of emancipation, both for the countries that one leaves as much as for those where one arrives.

The memory of Mattia has in fact moved along in the years. Even with his stay in Porchiano only being a decade long, his personality (figure and stature) has entered into the constitutional and fundamental memory of the Amerino area. This was due to his ability to situate himself in a social space where recognition of the traditions of farm labor and laborers was intermixed with life styles absolutely informed by the modern modes of associating that he learned in the USA.

This territory where he was born and to which he returned to live, represented a welcoming space which permitted many different people coming from different many countries to feel at home. In the good air of his native Porchiano, there is a community that knows how to be welcoming, open and cohesive without closing itself off and bending back into the viewpoint of a closed communitary-ism. It is also for this reason that anyone who happens to be at Parco Mattia especially during the First of May celebrations, even without having known Mattia Giurelli personally, will be struck and attracted by the symbolic significance which he continues to exercise and generate. In both being an extremely modern man who nonetheless remained profoundly connected to the ‘older’ traditional values, lies his capacity to continue transmitting living lessons, even after his death. Much has happened since the tragic day that he passed away. His memory has been carried forth in the hearts of individuals and also through public memorials: from the stone mass erected in the park shortly after his death (with the commemoration of Mayor Silvani) to the address given by Lama (future mayor of Amelia) to the street recently named after him in Amelia.

In 2004, 25 years after his passing, he was commemorated in the show “Mattia Mio dammi 100 Lire” (“Mattia Mine, Can you spare some change”) coordinated by Pierluigi Sbaraglia and promoted with several organizations including the Arciragazzi-Casa del Sole, Pro Loco and Dominio Collettivo di Porchiano. That show was also based in the investigations of the socio-cultural context done in the 1970’s by Sandro Romildo together with research by Daniela Margheriti and Carla Pernazza (the volume “Contadini in Umbria tra ‘800 e ‘900, supported by the ISUC and dedicated “to Mattia” came out in 1983) and availed itself of the work by the documentary film maker Paolo Boccio.

He was commemorated and discussed at Parco Mattia on April 28, 2007, in conversations ranging from recollections, testimonials, in photograph and in film sequences shot during the 40’s and 50’s both in Porchiano and Paterson (and which are now a part of the Mattia (Records) Donation. Elected officials and administrators from the Municipality of Amelia and the Province of Terni together with experts from the Regional History Institute of Umbria also participated in the activities that same day.
After that first public gathering, other occasions to gather multiplied, during which experts from all around Italy came to participate in the commemoration. The First of May celebration has in very particular fashion, become central to remembering and promoting the memory of Mattia.

The evening of historical reckoning about Mattia, April 30, 2009, coincided with the publication of “The Dream of Mattia between Paterson and Porchiano” a commemorative booklet edited by Maria Grazia Ruggerini , Sandro Romildo and Antonio Canovi. This historic evening was connected symbolically with the procession of young people who continue with the folk tradition of “Cantamaggio” (May Songs- define). All of this was not by chance but through the support of the Porchiano Pro Loco. It is truly surprising to see the dense vitality of memorial deposits which continue to accrue – both through subjective additions and generational ones – around the figure of Mattia. He is a biographical figurehead that elicits very good questions and asks to be questioned in the present tense. From here, the project can begin working with its fully historical dimensions, drawing on biographical research from the two sides of the Atlantic.
